What Is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a scientifically proven, non-invasive technology that utilizes electromagnetic fields to alter neural activity in the region of the brain associated with mood control and depression, such as the prefrontal brain.

TMS was originally introduced as a research tool to investigate brain function in studies of various neuropsychiatric conditions. Soon after the technique was introduced, several patients reported their mood improving after the TMS session. This interesting side-effect inspired the first investigation of TMS for depression treatment in 1987. when researchers studied the possibility of mood elevation in healthy individuals.  Soon after, other studies confirmed the antidepressant effect of TMS and multiple neuropsychiatric centers in the world began to investigate the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD).

TMS has also been investigated as a therapeutic tool for other psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, panic disorder,  auditory hallucination in schizophrenia, catatonia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. The potential benefit of TMS for neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, spasticity, dystonia, stuttering, tics, tinnitus has also been investigated. In other studies, TMS has demonstrated potential in alleviating pain in conditions such as migraine, neuropathic pain, and fibromyalgia.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a painless, inventive technique with immense potential in treating various psychiatric and neurological conditions.

Currently, it is FDA approved option for the treatment of major depressive disorder, single or recurrent, and is FDA cleared for the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
